The scarab is a symbol of the heavenly cycle and rebirth. Scarabs roll dung into a ball in which to lay their eggs and feed the newly hatched larvae, therefore creating and sustaining life from the end of a cycle.
 
Khepri, the God of the Rising Sun represented by a scarab, renews the sun every night before rolling it above the horizon. He transforms through his aspects of Ra, the midday sun; and Atum, the evening sun; as he travels across the sky. He then carries the sun down through the underworld in preparation for its re-emergence the next morning.
